Although earlier explorers might have seen it, American adventurer James Crawford Angel (1899-1956) first sighted the Angel Falls from air on 16th November 1933. After investigation, the falls on the river Churun were confirmed as the world's highest and named Salto Angel (Angel Falls) in his honor.
