Grant had escaped losing the battle by pure luck. Irregardless of Lincoln, Grant's supervising general, Henry Halleck took charge of Grant's army and followed the Rebels to Corinth Mississippi. Only when Halleck was promoted to general in chief, did Grant have his army returned to him.
