What is the climate in Madeira?

The weather in Majorca is normally quite dry during the spring and summer. In comparison, frequent thunderstorms occur during autumn. Winter time is subject to the occasional wet day with mild daytime temperatures. Majorca is located in a semi-arid region and normally records less than 600 millimetres of rain annually. The weather in Majorca can vary greatly depending upon your location and altitude. During the winter, heavy snow falls occur nearly every year over the Tramuntana mountains. The coastal regions rarely see any snow and record much milder temperatures. Most areas near the coastline have temperatures ranging between 5-10°C at night and 14-18°C by day. The region around Palma de Mallorca is warmer at night during the winter because of the heat island effect. During the summer (June-August), the southern and inland regions record the highest temperatures. In comparison, the Tramuntana mountains is the coolest spot in Majorca during the summer. The coastal areas are quite humid during the summer months and are buffeted by strong sea breezes. There might the occasional thunderstorm over the mountains during the summer but most other regions of Majorca do not see any rain. You'll see plenty of sun during the summer months. The hottest weather hits Majorca in late July/early August when winds blow in from North Africa. Daytime temperatures can reach between 35-40°C during such events. It's during the autumn months (September-November, but mainly October) that the thunderstorms form throughout Majorca during the afternoon. This is the time of the year that flash flooding can occur and so many people who travel here are caught out by the ferocity of the storms. These thunderstorms are sometimes accompanied with hail, but such storms are more frequent over the southern inland regions of Majorca. The spring weather in Majorca is mild to warm. There are many days that record maximum temperatures up to 30°C but these are short lived. The warmest days in April and May are subject to sea breezes and there may be a light shower or thunderstorm during March and April, but this is less likely to occur in May. The later part of spring is much sunnier than early spring since more stable weather conditions dominate as summer approaches.
