The heat is due to primal radioactive elements (i.e from the date of formation), with some heat due to gravitational compression.
[From memory and without further research, I seem to remember Kelvin worked out that if there were no active source of heat in the interior, the Earth would have cooled more. He had no idea of what that could be naturally. And it was Rutherford who produced the idea of primal radioactivity as a good idea. And it is renewable to some extent as the decay chain proceeds. Please correct these old recollections.]
