Some Hermit Crabs are land crabs that can get slightly wet. If they get too wet they can drown. Hermit crabs that live on the beach or sea, can most certainly get wet without harming the crabs. Hermit Crabs, that are kept as pets, are land Hermit Crabs. These will need baths in very shallow water. Their drinking water bowl should also be shallow. So, it looks like the answer is: they can get wet but should not be left in deep water and or be kept in water for any length of time. They should be allowed to get in and out of shallow water on the own.

The humidity level needs to be at least 70% but not higher than 75%

hermit crab humidity level needs to be around 60%-80% humidity. With our humidity they can die because hermit crab have little gills that ALWAYS needs to be moist.

There are many ways to manage humidity in a crabitat. The first, and most important step is making sure that the substrate you start with in the tank is moist sand, moist coco coir, or a moist mix of the two. Periodically mist or dribble dechlorinated water into the substrate to keep it moist. It should not be damp and drippy, but about sand castle consistency.

If you've already done that, misting the tank daily, making sure the tank cover doesn't allow too much evaporation, and limiting use of hot lights will help. You can also add a wet natural sea sponge, just be sure to boil it every few days because they can be a bacteria breeding ground.

You can put damp natural moss (I forgot which kind, but NO spanish moss or anything you might buy in a craft store! You can get it from your backyard if needed.) or mist the insides of their tank. DO NOT put a sponge in the tank! No matter what people say, leave throw that sponge away! It can grow bacteria which can be harmful for you crabbies!

Try putting next to a door so some wind gets in. Otherwise keep moving it until you get the humidity you need.

Do hermit crabs need to be moist?

It depends on the kind of hermit crab. if you find it at the beach it most likely needs water but if you find a land hermit crab they won't be able to breath under water, but land hermit crabs still enjoy being a little wet.

What kind of soil is used for hermit crabs?

Hermit Crabs can use cocanut husk, or soil that you get from any pet store used for reptiles. Hermit Crabs also use sand, they need a wet and also dry climate. If you get oil from the ground, you must bake it or freeze it in a really hot or cold temp. for a long while.

How does the hermit crab get its food?

you need to fill up the food bowl/plate/etc. up whenever it empties, wet the sponge with water every time it dries, keep the crabitat warm and humid, etc, and when it's molting, do whatever the answer to that say. DO NOT GIVE IT BATHS.

What should a hermit crabs habitat be like?

Usually when you set up a crabitat it should have 2 bowls, a food bowl and a water bowl. Also you should add some climbing toys in the petstore. There should be a place where they can hide like a small cave. Also you need a bedding like calcium sand. Tank should have a temperature between 72-80 degress. I have have land hermit crabs and it works. Hopes it helps!

How can you tell the difference between a land and a marine hermit crab?

You can tell a land hermit crab from a water hermit crab by looking at the claws/arms or legs. If it is a water crab it will be blueish and if land crab it will be pinkish purpleish. If your crab is a water crab don't just throw it in water and leave it there, put a tiny bowl in it's tank or cage that is low to the ground and make sure that the water level is a bit lower than the hermit crabs top of its legs. Also have a wet sponge for each kind of hermit crab in the crabs tank.

Why do crabs store water in their gill chamber before going on land?

I think it is because they need to be moist and it helps them breath because I have 3 hermit crabs and u need their tank to be wet and humid I hoped that helped😄

How does a hermit crab eat and breathe?

Well they do NOT breathe air, they just can be out of the water because they store it in their shell to breathe. This means that if you want to take your hermit crab out, you must give it a bath -no soap- so it can get breathing water in its shell.

How do you keep a hermit crab humid?

Spray it's crabitiat (habitiat) with distilled or spring water once a day. LIGHTLY spray the hermit crab not so much that it's dripping wet. so the same with the inside of the comtainer. you should also keep a couple sea sponges in the water dishes.

Can hermit krabs live in colore d sand?

Yes Hermit Crabs can live in colored sand, some people have them live in pink sand like I did:)It is 100 percent safe to let your Hermit Crab live in colored sand:)No, they should not live in the colored sand purchased in pet stores. That colored sand, usually 'Calci-sand'isn't true sand but calcium carbonate and prolonged exposure to it by humans or pets is unhealthy. Whenwet it can harden and trap the hermit crab beneath the surface which will kill the crab. The ideal substrate for pet hermit crabs is a mixture of shredded coconut husk such as Eco Earth and clean "play sand" which can be found in some hardware stores and is used in children's sand boxes. The mixture should be dampened to "sand castle consistency", so that when you grab a handful of it, it holds it's shape but is not so wet that it is "drippy". Hermit crabs need to be able to tunnel in their substrate for protection from the elements (too hot, too cold, too dry) or to molt and they may remain in their tunnels for days or weeks at a time.

Is it OK if the sand in a hermit crab's tank is wet?
