Hermit Crabs can use cocanut husk, or soil that you get from any pet store used for reptiles. Hermit Crabs also use sand, they need a wet and also dry climate. If you get oil from the ground, you must bake it or freeze it in a really hot or cold temp. for a long while.
Why do crabs store water in their gill chamber before going on land?
I think it is because they need to be moist and it helps them breath because I have 3 hermit crabs and u need their tank to be wet and humid I hoped that helped😄
How can you tell the difference between a land and a marine hermit crab?
You can tell a land hermit crab from a water hermit crab by looking at the claws/arms or legs. If it is a water crab it will be blueish and if land crab it will be pinkish purpleish. If your crab is a water crab don't just throw it in water and leave it there, put a tiny bowl in it's tank or cage that is low to the ground and make sure that the water level is a bit lower than the hermit crabs top of its legs. Also have a wet sponge for each kind of hermit crab in the crabs tank.

The mixture should be dampened to "sand castle consistency", so that when you grab a handful of it, it holds it's shape but is not so wet that it is "drippy". Hermit crabs need to be able to tunnel in their substrate for protection from the elements (too hot, too cold, too dry) or to molt and they may remain in their tunnels for days or weeks at a time.

There should be a place where they can hide like a small cave. Also you need a bedding like calcium sand. Tank should have a temperature between 72-80 degress. No, newspaper is not a good bedding for your hermit crab. Newspaper retains moisture and stays too wet. This will affect the humidity of your crabitat and also prevent heat from being retained. If you are looking for a cheap substrate for your hermit crab(s) I suggest using sand such as the kids sandbox sand you can get from Home Depot (just make sure that the bag is not wet, as bacteria could pose harmful effects on the creature.) Or, you can use Cyprus shavings (which you can purchase in reptile sections of pet stores). Cyprus shavings promote healthy burying of your hermit crab. Beddings to AVOID include: wood shavings (except Cyprus)...especially cedar as it is poisonous, cat litter (harmful if it gets into shell), garden dirt or potting soil (often contains fertilizer and pesticides, paper towels/newspaper (retain too much moisture and affect humidity), corn cob bedding (cannot burrow and it is rough on the legs) and finally...ground coconut/walnut shells (drain hermit crabs of moisture and they are sharp)

you need to fill up the food bowl/plate/etc. up whenever it empties, wet the sponge with water every time it dries, keep the crabitat warm and humid, etc, and when it's molting, do whatever the answer to that say. DO NOT GIVE IT BATHS.
