The answer to this is the same as the answer to "how important is education for sports stars?".. VERY!
First, music, just like sports, is a business. YOU are your product and knowing something about marketing, accounting and management will help you take control of your life rather than simply be buffeted by the fates.
Second, the purpose of education is not to simply get you a job but, rather to expand your mind and help you to live a useful, examined life. Being able to make decisions based on principles and knowledge rather than simply learning by experience is a wonderful consequence of higher studies.
Lastly, being qualified to find a good job while your musical (or sports) career takes off, is NOT a bad thing. Nowhere is it written that you HAVE to struggle for your music. And, after your career has run it's course, being able to work somewhere and not have to say "...would you like fries with that?" Priceless!
