The original eisteddfod took place in the country of Wales which, along with England and Scotland and Northern Ireland, makes up the United Kingdom. Wales has its own language - much older than English - that came from pre-Roman times - the times of the Celts, a tribe that lived in that part of the world around 2000 years ago.The word eisteddfod comes from the welsh verb 'eistedd' which means 'to sit' and hence the word eisteddfod means literally 'The Sitting'. The eisteddfod music and poetry festival was called 'the sitting' because originally the judges would it around n a circle with the performers and judge their performances. Nowadays, of course, the term eisteddfod is used all over the world for a musical or poetry festival. Even today, eisteddfods that occur in Wales are almost exclusively conducted in Welsh as there are still many tens of thousands in the country that speak the language - some of whom speak it as their first language and who learn English as a foreign language although part of the United kingdom.Incidentally most non-Welsh people pronounce Eisteddfod incorrectly. Most pronounce it: Eye - STEDD - vud. However, in Welsh a 'd' is pronounced as 'd' in dog, but a double d 'dd' is pronounced as 'th' in 'this' (rather than the softer sound of 'th' in 'theatre'). Similarly, 'f' is pronounced as 'v' in 'very but 'ff' is pronounced as 'f' in 'fish'. As there is a single 'f' in eisteddfod it has to be pronounced as 'v' in 'very'. So the word eisteddfod is correctly pronounced Eye-STETH-vod.
