Wales has its own language - much older than English - that came from pre-Roman times - the times of the Celts, a tribe that lived in that part of the world around 2000 years ago.The word eisteddfod comes from the welsh verb 'eistedd' which means 'to sit' and hence the word eisteddfod means literally 'The Sitting'. The eisteddfod music and poetry festival was called 'the sitting' because originally the judges would it around n a circle with the performers and judge their performances. Nowadays, of course, the term eisteddfod is used all over the world for a musical or poetry festival.
