The Israelites had been oppressed by the Egyptians for over 400 years. When God sent 10 plagues over Egypt, pharaoh let the Israelites go.......but not for long. He quickly changed his mind and pursued them. The Israelites were scared and asked, "Were there not enough graves in Egypt that the Lord will let us die in the desert?" Moses replied, "Stand firm and you will see the deliverance of the Lord today." Moses then parted the Red Sea and the Israelites went through on try ground. When Pharaoh's army tried to cross, God closed the waters and Pharaohs whole army drowned. They were able to see the deliverance of the Lord.......thats why it's such a big event. (I had to study Exodus for over 6 months......thats why I knew the answer!!)

Through Moses, God reaches out to the Israelites and frees them from slavery. God uses Moses as a sort of human instrument in order to rescue the Israelites. The Israelites had been slaves to the Egyptians for 430 years and had been suffering.

Moses returned to Egypt, and with the help of his brother Aaron, they appealed to the Pharaoh and told him that God wanted him to "let His people go" (referring to the Israelites). Moses followed the orders of God, and when needed, God channeled His power through the staff given to Moses to bring about the 10 plagues and also to part the Red Sea when freeing the Israelites from slavery.

After being freed from slavery, Moses led the Israelites in their travels, taking them where God told them to go. Moses was basically the person that God worked through in order to free the Israelites and lead them to the Promised Land, and this is why Moses was important. He was the one that was in contact with God and was the leader of the Israelites in their journey. Without Moses, the Israelites started to sin and become disorderly. Moses kept order by speaking the Word of God.

Moses was the most important Israelite who ever lived. He took us out of Egypt at God's command (Exodus ch.12) and brought us the Torah from God (Exodus 24:12).

Why is Moses is important in the history of the Israelites?

------------------------ Moses is important in Jewish belief because The Bible says that he led the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt, and that he gave the people the Ten Commandments. Moses would only be important in Israelite history if indeed the Exodus from Egypt really occurred. However, over 90 per cent of scholars are reported to say that the biblical Exodus from Egypt never really occurred. On this view, Moses probably never existed and certainly did not have an important place in Israelite history.
