Alum is used as a "retention" aid in the papermaking furnish. To explain more, the furnish is made up of water, wood fibers, and other very small particulates known as fines, which occur naturally in the furnish, and as added chemicals. The chemicals are expensive and wasting them costs a lot of money. The fines increase strength and basis weight so keeping these particles is important. As paper is made, these small particles get lost and essentially fall off the paper. Alum is used to retain these small particles in the final paper product.
