America, meaning the USA, resembles Mexico to the extent that it has received millions of immigrants (legal and illegal) from Mexico, and now has a very large Hispanic population. It has been extrapolated that eventually Hispanic immigrants (from Mexico, Central America, or other locations in Latin America) will constitute the single most populous ethnic group in America, surpassing the Anglo-Saxons. At that point it may become logical for the US to become a bilingual nation, with English and Spanish as official languages. The Mexican cultural influence in the US is more obvious in some states than others, but Mexican cuisine such as tacos and burritos are widely available. The US now consumes more salsa than tomato ketchup.

Mexico and the United States are both North American nations, neighboring each other. Both are also trade and business partners belonging to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and have a pretty large and complex history including conflicts such as the Texas Revolution (1835-1836) or the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) as well as diplomatic and military cooperation including the diplomatic support provided by the United States to Mexico during the Second Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867) or the Escuadron 201 air squad provided by Mexico during World War 2 (1939-1945). The Southwestern population of the United States has more affinity to Mexico, as California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas used to belong to Mexico and many Mexican immigrants have arrived to these lands for the last 60 years.

Now, on the differences. Mexico is a Latin American nation with a large Spanish-speaking, Roman Catholic population (Roman Catholic: 88%, Protestant: 5.2%) while the US is an Anglo American country with a majority of English-speaking population and a dominance of Protestantism (Protestant: 52%, Roman Catholic 24%). The ethnic make up of Mexico is predominantly of mestizo (60%) and Amerindian people (30%) while Americans are predominantly European (52%) and on a lesser degree, African (13%), Asian (5%), and Hispanic people of many ethnicities (15%). Both the US and Mexico are federal presidential republics, but Mexico has 31 independent states and one federal district while America has 50 states and one such federal district. Finally, the United States has the largest economy of any nation in the world, while Mexico is an emerging market which ranks as the 11th largest economy.

Finally, some statistics:

  • Population (2012):
    • Mexico - 114,975,406
    • United States - 313,847,465
  • Land area:
    • Mexico - 1,964,375 sq km (758,449 sq mi)
    • United States - 9,826,675 sq km (3,794,101 sq mi)
  • Gross Domestic Product (2011):
    • Mexico - USD$1,135 billion
    • United States - USD$14,083 billion
  • GDP Per Capita (2011):
    • Mexico - USD$10,146
    • United States - USD$48,328
  • Median Age (2012):
    • Mexico - 28.5 years
    • United States - 37.1 years

No. Mexico is a country (officially known as United Mexican States, but it is usually known as Mexico) and its capital is Mexico City. Both are separate entities.

Now, many people -- especially Mexicans while in Mexico -- call Mexico City as just Mexico, or "the capital" (Spanish: la capital) or even DF which stands for Distrito Federal or Federal District.
