They have voted to leave and will leave in 2 years
what member states currently holds the presidency of the eu in October 2017
Britain is just one of 28 members. It is an important country in Europe, but the EU can function without it. What was then the EEC was formed in 1957 by six countries. Britain did not join until 1973. So it was 16 years without Britain being involved. The EEC evolved and more countries joined and it is now called the EU. The EU may need to reform as a result of the decision of Britain to leave, to change some of the reasons why Britain felt it should leave. It will take time for Britain to leave and there is even the possibility that they will decide not to.
Britain is part of the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is a member of the EU, so Britain is therefore part of it.
Great Britain is composed of England, Wales and Scotland. The UK is Britain + Northern Ireland. To join the EU as Great Britain would be to exclude Northern Ireland from the EU.
Because we would have to stay in the EU if we didnt!!

Periodically, there are discussions raised in Britain as to whether or not they should remain it the European Union (EU). At this time, it is not clear what the fruit of the current round of discussions on this matter will be.
Britain was in a global union with 27 other countries. Through this they were able to trade goods, allow people from the other countries in the union to travel to other countries in the union and be involved in a multitude of markets. This may all seem well and good, but the problem is lack of control.Any countries in the EU have to follow EU laws. If Britain disagreed with a law, there wasn't really much they could do about it. Immigration, VAT/taxing and other standards are regulated by the EU. So if they set a rate, Britain would have to apply it to it's own country. Now that they have voted to leave the EU, and once Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty has been activated, they will be able to start the divorce between the UK and the EU. If this article doesn't get started, then the UK doesn't officially leave the EU.

The EU allows natives from the involved countries to work in the other involved countries. The EU also manages the Euro, allowing the involved countries to work on regional issues, rather than their economy (not including the UK (The United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) which uses the British Pound). The EU also creates a mutual bond between the collection of countries part of the EU, so that if war were to break out, all those countries in the EU would be automatically in alliance.
