Ireland is predominantly Catholic and observance of the events leading up to Easter begin with Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent. Those who observe religious holidays observe this time of the year with reverence.
Good Friday is a solemn day. No woodworking or building is done in observance of Christ's death on a wooden cross. People remain silent from noon to 3:00.
Easter Saturday is not as solemn as Good Friday. It is a day of preparation for Easter Sunday and visiting with family and friends. Families bless homes with holy water. Priests in some areas go from house to house blessing them. Special Easter vigils are held in churches at night.
On Easter Sunday, families get together wearing new clothes and many attend mass together. After mass, families return home for an Easter meal that includes meat, stuffing, bread, potatoes, vegetables and other foods. After the meal, children are given traditional Irish Easter eggs.
Easter eggs are not only colored, decorated and eaten in Ireland, they are used for games such as egg rolling.
