The book of genesis is a collection of independent stories that cover a very wide span of time. The first chapter contains two quite contradictory accounts of the very beginning The first account is probably Babylonia and contains a more philosophical/scientific account (scientific for its day that is). The second account is probably the more Hebrew in origin and lacks the bold assertions on the nature of the universe.
