John the Baptist is a Christian cultural artifact. As a consequence only 1/3 of the world's population (the Christians) have any knowledge of him. As many Christians have little or no Biblical or theological training many would not be able to state the accepted body of "facts" about John the baptist. So the answer must be - John the Baptist is generally not known, or only peripherally know by the wide majority of the world's population.
