Matilda is a woman's name. It is also a popular handle for female Kangaroos as the popular song Waltzing Matilda is virtually the Australian national song. The song, almost like Mack The Knife ( written much later) has a rather lighthearted approach to a man, called a Jolly Swagman, who abducts a sheep from a farmer, and ultimately is confronted by three policemen. No one name Matilda figures in the song as a love interest, but there was a powerful Countess Matilda of Tuscany in the middle ages- a Field Grade ( I would say equivalent to Major) Lady Knight- centuries before Joan of Arc, and this Gal in armor had the blessings of the church.
