A US dollar bill is made from a special "paper" composed of linen and cotton. Multiple bills are typically printed on large sheets of the special paper using a variety of inks that create the seals and markings of a the design. Today most sheets hold 32 bills at a time but the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is transitioning to larger presses that can print 50 bills at a time. Each sheet goes through 3 separate printing steps to create the design and add seals and serial numbers. After printing, the sheets are allowed to dry and are then cut into individual bills that are packaged and distributed through the Federal Reserve System.

The process is not typically discussed in greater detail to protect against counterfeiters.
