This is a question that has confounded mankind for centuries. Leonardo daVinci was intrigued by bird flight and spent much of his life working on designs and ideas for flying machines of various kinds.

A simple explanation is that birds are extremely well adapted to the requirements of flight. Their bones are very lightweight and fragile. Feathers are shaped in ways that when arranged in the wings, they create an ideal aerodynamic surface that provides lift from underneath. The flapping process is more complex than originally thought, and essentially produces the force needed to begin flight and to change speed. The tail is mostly used for balance and directional changes, although the wings participate in this as well.
