Asteroids are thought to have a different origin from comets, having formed inside the orbit of Jupiter rather than in the outer Solar System.
Comets and asteroids are the same, but differ in the fact that comets have surface activity with their characteristic tail.
A comet can be going away from the sun and the ion trail will still make it look like it's going into the sun. The ion trail does not show what direction the comet is going because rays from the sun are knocking particles off of the comet and are directed away from the sun.
