For example, an iPod Touch 1st generation is defined a 1st generation iPod Touch because it is Apple's first time making that iPod. The iPod Touch 2nd generation is defined by it being a 2nd generation because it is the second time Apple has made that iPod better because they added internal speakers and an overall faster processer, along with a slimmer design.
