How is a moon formed?

Moons are normally formed in the same way planets are. Material in the protoplanetary disk clumps together under the effects of gravity, and forms a larger object. As it (or they) grow, they enter an orbital system with the main planet, becoming a moon.

Earth's moon in particular is believed to have formed in a similar way, except that early in Earth's formation, another Mars-sized body struck the planet and the resulting ejected material then formed into the moon.
