Permanent mount instead of temporary mount.

A wet slide is usually prepared just before use. A drop of the medium (pond water or culture broth) is placed upon a microscope slide and then covered with a cover glass or slip. Capillary action slowly draws the water to the sides of the cover slip where it evaporates. At some point air will get under the slip.

A prepared slide is sealed. The medium used is an acrylic or other resin dissolved in a solvent like toluene. When the solvent evaporates, the specimen is "locked" under the slip.

Both wet and prepared slides can contain stained specimens, but prepared slides often have been "fixed" (sometimes with flame) after staining and will usually keep a very long time.
