A rock is a natural occurring aggregate of mineral/mineraloids. A gemstone is a piece of mineral. Basically what that means is that a rock is a collection of minerals. A gemstone is a piece of a mineral. Gemstone's are rocks. But a rock has many gemstones. Since gemstones are really precious, they are hard to find.. diamonds may be carbon but they have to be down in the ground for billions of years or so pressed on hard with a lot heat to become diamonds.
