Explosions come in two types - deflagration and detonation. In deflagration the heat from the reaction quickly heats surrounding unreacted reactants causing the reaction to accelerate - producing more heat to accelerate the reaction even more, etc. Also with the rapid reaction, it compresses the gas around it further accelerating the reaction in the gas phase.
In a detonation the reaction occurs so quickly that the reaction boundary outstrips the shockwave (which travels at sonic speed), compressing the material behind it as well as in front of it.
Detonations are much more powerful than deflagrations.
