Cholesterol is only partly soluble in water. Cholesterol is a lipid (fat) which in water at room temperature, most fats are mostly insoluble in water. At higher temperatures fats are slightly more soluble.

Cholesterol is partly soluble in water, its biliary solubility appears to depend solely upon its concentration relative to the molar concentration of bile salts and lecithin. Bile salts and lecithin have cholesterol solubilization properties that are markedly enhanced by their combination in mixed micelles. When the two act together, it makes cholesterol soluble.
