Deists believe a God (or Gods) exist. Atheists do not.
Deists tend to believe God is a rational explanation for the existence of the universe, but rarely if ever intervenes in its operation.
The term atheism originated from the Greek ἄθεος (atheos), meaning "without god(s)". It would be difficult to determine who first used it, but atheist as a label of practical godlessness was used at least as early as 1577. Related words emerged later: deist in 1621, theist in 1662; theism in 1678; and deism in 1682.

The word "deism" has its roots in the word "god". Deism refers to the belief that based on observation, the natural world has "reason" and this is sufficient to justify the existence of God. In short, deism refers to the belief that there is God.
Deism has no holy book as that would require divine revelation.

He was a pantheist or basically used poetic language to describe the workings and laws of the universe. That is what his methapors of a God meant. The laws/underpinnings of the universe. His was a pantheism closer to atheism then deism though. He didn't believe in any conscious or self aware creator/designer.
You might say that the atomic theory (all matter is composed of elementary particles called atoms) supports deism (natural religion based on reason) and pantheism (the deity is in everything). This theory and probably dozens of others 'support' deism and pantheism in the sense that they do not contradict, oppose or disprove them. That is different from saying that the theory represents strong evidence that they are true.
Atheism is a noun.
