They send a I believe micro wave or radar wave down to the bottom and it bounces back and they measure the time of how long it takes to get back to the receiver and do a few calculations from the time they got and they have the depth. (usually the machines do the calculations for you. and it only take like .5 seconds to calculate everything if its like 100 feet or less.)
