Electric current is what is specifically dangerous to the human body. It only takes one ampere to stop a person's heart, but the average current from an electrical socket could be several times that. Furthermore, if a person were to complete an electrical circuit with both hands (plugging two things in at once, grabbing a power line with both hands, etc), they would create a path for electricity that would run directly through their heart, and their muscles in their arms may tense up from the shock, keeping them from letting go, so they would be continually shocked. When plugging thing in, only use one hand (you'll just get knocked back in the event of a shock), keep your hand on the rubber or plastic insulation, and not on the metal prongs, do not use frayed or exposed wires, and make sure both the ground beneath you and your shoes are not wet. You shouldn't be afraid of electricity, but it can cause you serious harm, and you should respect that and be aware at all times when dealing with it.
