That it gives Oedipus a chance to survive and live out his dreadful fate is the way in which fortune is important in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).
Specifically, fortune refers to chance. It is chance that the Corinthian shepherd herds his flocks outside Thebes and gets Oedipus from the Theban shepherd who is supposed to kill the three-day-old infant by exposure. It is chance that Oedipus heads from Delphi to Thebes at the same time that Theban King Laius leaves from Thebes for Delphi. It is chance that Oedipus gets to Thebes in time to outwit the Sphinx and marry the beautiful widowed Queen Jocasta.
by answering the riddle of the sphinx and saving Thebes from the rule of the sphinx.
"Rex" is Latin for "King". Oedipus Rex means "Oedipus the King".
Thebes is the setting of Oedipus Rex because it is the place where the story begins.
'King' is an English equivalent of 'Rex' in the play 'Oedipus Rex'.
The shepherd in Oedipus Rex is the person who rescues Oedipus Rex as a child. The shepherd also confirms the main character's fate.
Oedipus Rex is part of a four part collection of plays, three tradgedies and a comedy. We do not have the Comedy but the three tradgedies are "Oedipus Rex", "Oedipus at Colonus", and "Antigone".
Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone
Sophocles, an Ancient Greek playwright, wrote Oedipus Rex.
Oedipus
That he is the city's savior is the reason why Oedipus remains important to Thebes in "Oedipus Rex," "Oedipus at Colonus" and "Antigone" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Oedipus becomes the disgraced King of Thebes. But he cannot be dismissed or ignored historically. He rescues the city from the monstrous Sphinx and from a pestilence of ailing livestock, dying children and failing crops.
Antigone, Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus
Laius was the father of Oedipus who Oedipus killed.
