Most of the time the doctor or nurse will take a swab from the vagina, penis, throat, or rectum. Increasingly, urine testing is used -- much easier for the patient! You will have to specifically be tested for the bacteria to know if you are infected or not.

Depending on the patient, the health care provider may use culture, DNA testing, or gram staining to detect gonorrhea. Getting the sample may involve a urine test or a swab.
