Actually it is 9.8 meter/second2. This is an acceleration, not a speed. It refers to how much objects are accelerated due to Earth's gravity: every second, the speed of an object falling down will increase by a speed of 9.8 m/s (assuming air resistance is negligible). This is also equivalent to 9.8 Newton/kg, that is, every kilogram is attracted with a force of 9.8 Newton.
