Gypsum is a hydrated form of calcium sulphate which occurs as an "evaporite" deposit, having been formed in the beds of ancient seas as they dry out. Large curved and arrow-head shaped crystals are common, as the slow drying process can often promote the formation of very large crystals.
Gypsum is mined at several locations in the far west of NSW, near Bourke and Menindie and also in western Victoria and South Australia. An artificial form of gypsum is also produced as a by-product of fertilizer manufacture. The uses of gypsum are:
Gypsum is widely used in building applications. It is an ingredient found in concrete, and it is used to make plaster.

Gypsum is used in sheetrock, plaster, fertilizers, and filler in paper.
After a source of gypsum is found, regular mining equipment will be used to extract it from the ground. As with mining other minerals, mining gypsum can lead to environmental harm.
