heredity is determined by the passing down of genes from each parent, we have 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent, this is where you get the genes to cross over during meiosis (the cell cycle of producing gametes)

When crossing over occurs, it heightens the random chance of inherited traits. Each parent has their own two chromosomes to split up so this is why no one looks exactly alike or a complete mesh between the two parents. =)
