Iron in its native (= natural state and pure) state is very uncommon, but is found in some meteorites.

Iron manufacture consists of mixing iron ore (Fe2O3 or Fe3O4) with carbon (C) so as to reduce it. That is to remove the oxygen. The carbon feedstock is in the form of high quality coal or coke. Usually limestone is also added so that sand and dirt will bind with the lime to form a flux that floats to the top of the molten iron.

Performed at heat in a furnace, and the melted iron is run out and formed into sheet, rod etc.
