A thin, circular flap is made in the cornea with a special tool called amicrokeratome. After the surgeon folds this flap back out of the way, he then removes some corneal tissue from underneath using an excimer laser. This laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to ablate very tiny bits of tissue from the cornea to reshape it.
