Researchers believe that the infectious agent that causes mad cow disease is an abnormal version of a protein normally found on cell surfaces, called a prion. For reasons still unknown, this protein becomes altered and destroys nervous system tissue -- the brain and spinal cord.

MCD is transferred if you eat beef that is contaminated with prions from a cow that has BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy). For cows, it is spread by eating feed that contains contaminated animal by-product.

Mad Cow disease is NOT a virus or any pathogen that is easily spread from animal to animal. BSE is spread only by the cattle consuming feed that is contaminated with prions that came from vector that was contaminated from contact with a piece of an animal with BSE, or from animal protein by-product in the feed that contains traces of BSE prions. Thus, Mad Cow disease cannot be spread by contact, air, or bacteria in the soil, but only from consuming BSE-infected feedstuffs, which many only affect one animal, but will not affect the others, or, in worst case scenarios, if the whole herd ate that feed, then they are all affected.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, the scientific name for mad cow disease) is caused by a prion (misfolded protein). In humans, the disease is called variant Creutzfeld-Jacob's disease (vCJD). Neither of these diseases are contagious from person to person - each person would have to consume contaminated beef products to contract the disease.

Infectious BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the scientific name for mad cow disease) was spread by consumption of the infectious prion. Prior to the discovery of BSE, it was common practice for dead cow carcasses to be rendered (cooked at a high temperature under pressure to break down otherwise inaccessible nutrients) and then the resulting protein meal to be fed back to cows. However, the infectious prion responsible for causing BSE was not destroyed during rendering, thus allowing the prion to be transmitted from cow to cow.

Since this time, all countries have banned the use of ruminant-derived rendered protein in ruminant feeds.

How is mad cow disease thought to spread among cows?

It is not well known as to how mad cow disease (BSE) spreads. It was thought to be spread from "animal recycling" (feeding animal by-products back to cattle such as bone meal or other ground animal parts in feed). It is NOT spread from cow-to-cow contact. Animal recycling is still allowed to be used in fertilizer and pet feed, but is not allowed to go to animals that will be used for human consumption.

Can humans get mad cow disease?

People do not get Mad Cow Disease. No human can get mad cow disease but humans can be infected by eating meat from a contaminated cow that has mad cow disease. The disease in people that has been associated with humans is called variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (vCJD) that is also a progressive fatal neurological disease.

Can foot and mouth disease of cow cause death?

No, but it's a highly transmissible disease that reduces an animal's ability to be normally productive.

What is the harmful effect of cow on humans and diseases spread by them?

Under most circumstances, cows are not a danger to humans. However, eating contaminated beef can result in the spread of the deadly E. Coli Virus and Mad Cow Disease.

What spread mad cow disease?

The main spread of mad cow disease actually came from a sheep. Some bits of sheep meat was used in cow feed until the 2000`s. Sadly, part of the sheep`s brain was in the meat and in their brain tissue was scrapie. A disease were an efected prion(pronounced pree-on) a diseased protein particle eats part of a sheep`s brain, therefore cattle got the disease. When cattle was shipped to other countries just like the black plague, it spread, but luckily it was only a huge risk temporarily.

What is cow disease?

There is no such thing as "cow disease" unless you are referring to MAD cow disease, which is something else entirely.

Why is Mad Cow Disease back in the news as of April 2012?

A cow that died at a dairy farm in California was randomly chosen to be tested by the USDA. After being tested, it was discovered that though the animal was asymptomatic (i.e. it showed no signs of the disease), it had BSE (also known as Mad Cow Disease). For more information, see the related link.
