The chemical composition of cotton for textile industry is as follows:

  • cellulose 91.00%
  • water 7.85%
  • protoplasm, pectin 0.55%
  • waxes, fatty substances 0.40%
  • mineral salts 0.20%

Cellulose is an organic polymer whose monomer has the formula C6H10O5-, where - indicates the open bond that forms the polymeric chain. It is a polysaccharide generally consisting of a linear chain of several hundred to over ten thousand monomers.

Base cotton is clear white, it it appears to be colored, naturally a colorant has to be inserted in it, that does not appears in the above composition.
