These chemicals contain chlorine and bromine atoms that are released into the atmosphere through human activities. When these molecules reach the stratosphere, they are broken down by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, releasing chlorine and bromine atoms that can then catalytically destroy ozone molecules. This process leads to the depletion of ozone in the stratosphere.
