There are various instances in physics where what is expected is not true.

For example, when you are holding a bucket of water and you want to lower it, you wouldn't push it downward, but you'd rather push up less but still be pushing up.

Also, though friction is what causes things to stick, it is also what causes things to move. Without friction, car wheels would not be able to start rolling or to stop moving the car.
