In The Bible reconciliation means a change of relationship between God and man based on the redemptive work of Christ.
2Corinthians 5:18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,
2Corinthinans 5:19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
Notice these verses show that it is God who does the reconciling. You could say reconciliation is an encounter with Christ, but I think it is better to say an encounter with Christ comes first. If you accept the salvation God offers through Christ then you are reconciled to God.
