Recordable CDs use a layer of material that can be melted by a laser. As the recording occurs, the laser melts - or doesn't melt - a small dip in the material. When the recorded CD is read later, it reads the dips and peaks as 1s and 0s - a binary record.

Cassettes ARE magnetic recording tape. You can record these onto a computer and then burn them to CD, or use a standalone CD recorder to transfer the recording.
There are currently not any boomboxes that feature a CD recording feature.
