An induction motor is an alternating current (only) motor that has one or more coils of wire wound on a metal frame that induces a current in the conductors in the rotor when the rotor is moving at a different than synchronous speed. Synchronous speed it determined by the line frequency and the number of poles the motor has. For example, a two pole motor with a 60 Hz line frequency would have a synchronous speed of 3600 RPM.

When used with single phase, the magnetic field generated in the stator needs to be caused to rotate around the rotor. In most cases this is initiated by a separate starting winding that is fed out of phase with the running winding(s). Once the rotor is rotating, the stator's field rotation has been established and the starting circuit is generally switched off.

Single phase Induction motor

How single-phase induction motor classified?

The single phase induction motors are made self starting by providing an additional flux by some additional means. Now depending upon these additional means the single phase induction motors are classified as: 1.Split phase induction motor. 2.Capacitor start inductor motor. 3.Capacitor start capacitor run induction motor. 4. Shaded pole induction motor.

Self starting single phase induction motors are also called?

Split Phase Induction Motor.

How do you start single phase induction motor?

capacitive start motors start by themselves however a normal single phase induction motor requires a starter motor to 'kick-start' the motor into action.

How many poles are required on motor starters for the following motors a240-volt single-phase induction motor b440-volt three-phase induction motor?

For a 240-volt single-phase induction motor, a two-pole motor starter is typically required, as it connects to the two live conductors of the single-phase supply. For a 440-volt three-phase induction motor, a three-pole motor starter is needed, as it connects to the three phases of the three-phase supply.

Why you use only single phase induction motor not other?

You would use a single-phase induction motor if the available electric power supply is a single-phase one. That applies to the average house or small business.
