When snow falls on roads it can make them slippery, which makes it harder to control road vehicles. Snow may also melt and then refreeze to form slick ice. Blowing snow can reduce visibility, which can also make driving dangerous. In the United States alone hundreds of people die every year and thousands are injured in snow-related car accidents. Deep snow can make some roads completely impassable. In extreme cases, snow may be so deep that people become trapped in their homes, unable to get food, medicine, or emergency services. Snow can block chimneys, causing poisonous carbon monoxide to build up inside. Heavy wet snow can bring down trees and collapse roofs.
