There are two different ways to gather solar energy. One is by direct thermal means-the sun's heat is used to heat a liquid heat transfer medium in glass tubes, usually the sun's rays are focussed on the tubes using parabolic mirrors. This type of installation has been sited in the Mojave Desert Cal, and in Nevada.
The other method is to use photovoltaic cells where electricity is produced directly by exposure to the sun's rays.
