Technology in criminology is used for data analysis, surveillance, forensic evidence analysis, and crime mapping. It helps in solving crimes by providing faster and more accurate results, enhancing investigation techniques, and improving overall efficiency in the criminal justice system. Additionally, technology can aid in crime prevention through the development of predictive policing models and monitoring systems.

This is a very broad question. One important use is to check properties one allready knows about the perpetrator against information stored about citizens in governmental databases. Thus it gets much easier to find the person having convicted a crime

These databases can be those belonging to the police itself, storing information about people allready having been under investigation, under trial or convicted. The databases can also be general datastores comprizing all citizens.

The amount and types of data that can be held in such databases is however restricted by law in most communities and so is often the permission for the police to use the databases.

Another use of information technology is the surveiilance of the traffic generated by specific individuals or organisations to detect signs of criminal activities. But also this use is restricted by law in most communities.
