Generally, the areas of the Atacama close to the Pacific Coast have a high relative humidity (~75%) versus 5-10% relative humidity away from the coast. Since the temperature near the coast is close to the dew point, once the temperature drops after sunset, fog frequently forms. It is somewhat strange to have such dense fog when the area receives virtually no rainfall. This fog allows some plants to grow which, in turn, allow some insects, lizards and other small animals to survive.
