The elements in the Periodic Table are arranged so that there is an increase from left to right (such as atomic radius) and from up to down (such as atomic weight). The elements that have somehow similar properties (not always, mind you) are arranged in families (or columns, as you unappropriately name them).

Same amount of valence electrons,for example alkaline metals are very reactive because they want to get rid of one electron and so Lithium, Sodium , rubidium,potassium ,cesium , and francium all want to get rid of one electron!
