I'm guessing you're referring to the first book. Bella is ready to give herself up to James, the vampire who's ready to eat her and fight with Edward. She arrives in James's trap realizes it too late. She tries to run away but James keeps her there and was able to bite into her arm before Edward came in and fought with him. The venom began taking over Bella, whilst Edward is ripping off the head of James and killing him. Alice and the rest of his family finish James off, while Edward sucks the venom out of Bella. It's sucked out and Bella lives. The end.
The Cullens kill James so Bella is safe again.
No. There would be no series otherwise. the series is a continuation of their lives not separate stories with the same main characters.
