Crude oil needs to be separate because as its crude oil at different boiling points burns and so it creates different types of elements, like for example gasoline at 600 degrees celsius

"Fractional" distillation simply means that you are using some condensing medium (i.e. steel wool) inside the distillation column. In either case, alkanes are a good compound because they are highly volatile (and good for combustion. Hence the reason they are used for fuels). Their volatility causes them to evaporate easily and at different boiling points. As the temperature of the mixed compounds increase, the more volatile substance will travel up the distillation column (ideally) leaving the other compounds behind. The greater the difference in the boiling points of each individual compound (or alkane), the greater the separation will be.

Air is mixture of different gasses (80% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen and some CO2) each Component gas in air has different boiling point (eg Oxygen boils at 90.19 K and Nitrogen boils at 77.355 K)

Thus when air is condensed into liquid and then heated, at 77.355 K the Nitrogen will boil off, leaving the Oxygen.

Most often by distillation, usually multiple stage distillation in a fractionating column in a refinery.

What mixture separated by fractional distillation?

fractional distillation is used in oil refineries to separate crude oil into useful substances (or fractions) having different hydrocarbons of different boiling points.

How is crude oil separated into different fractions?

you use fractional distillation! basically, all the different substances in crude oil have different boiling points, and the column which is used to do fractional distillation has stages with different temperatures. when the substance reaches its boiling point temperature in the column, it turns into liquid and settles there, away from other fuels.

Why is crude oil separated by fractional distillation?

Petroleum is a mixture of various useful constituents and cannot be used directly,so to use it we have to seperate petroleum by a method called fractional distillation of petroleum.
