It is used to identify a horizontal opening to a mine. For a fictitious example someone might say "the Dutchman Mine has one adit on the south side of Gold Hill and two more on the west".
Stope, adit, shaft, vein, ore, drilling, blasting, are a few mining terms.

It's an ADIT
An adit is a horizontal tunnel used in mining. They're not directly related to dams but in the construction of Hoover Dam a number of adits were used to facilitate the construction of the various tunnels associated with the dam. For example, adits were cut into the center of the canyon for the diversion tunnels allowing the tunnels to be cut faster; instead of just two work faces (upstream and downstream) an adit was cut and work started in the middle. That allowed four working faces on each tunnel: upstream portal, adit to upstream portal, adit to downstream portal, downstream portal.

The two types of mining are Open-cast mining and Underground mining. Underground mining is further divided in to Adit mining and Shaft mining.

This is known as drift mining. The horizontal opening is known as an adit.
come, adit
The most common mining method used to extract ore from beneath the earth's surface is underground mining. This method involves creating tunnels and shafts to access the ore body underground, where miners extract the ore using various techniques. Underground mining can be more expensive and dangerous than surface mining but is necessary for accessing deep deposits of valuable minerals.
